Background & Experience
Philip McAvoy is the founder of the Beyond Buy & Hold newsletter in addition to some other related investment businesses. Mr. McAvoy is a successful hedge fund manager (the Norwood Equity fund) and is also the Managing Director of Norwood Equity Advisors, LLC.
Philip McAvoy has far-reaching business experience, with extensive experience in investments and the financial services industry. The investing system was created by Mr. McAvoy, a former CEO and 30-year veteran from the retail industry. Philip has extensive investing experience as an individual investor and extensive experience investing tens of millions of dollars of his previous employer’s money through third-party financial firms, advisors, and consultants. That experience involved moving invested assets away from individual stocks and towards funds and funds of funds. A dissatisfaction with the status quo and an unwillingness to accept that “buy and hold” is the best that the investment industry has to offer led to the creation of the proprietary strategy and the algorithms used in the Beyond Buy & Hold investing system.
Philip’s background was in data-driven marketing. He was affectionately known as a “Mad Marketing Scientist” during his retail career. Philip created and developed several innovative quantitative retail marketing approaches throughout his career covering things like store location models, highly personalized email marketing programs, and customer lifestyle segmentation strategies and models, as well as sophisticated consumer data capture strategies and forecasting systems. Philip began his career as a financial analyst after graduating from Tufts University with a degree in Economics.
The Beyond Buy & Hold Story
Like you, in 2019, I was anxious about my retirement nest egg as it had been eleven years since the last stock market crash. It was not hard to predict another crash coming as they happen about once every six or seven years on average. And I did not want to go through another crash like the one in 2000 or the one in 2008. These crashes are painful financially and emotionally. It is horrible sitting by helplessly as you watch your hard-earned investments cut in half. I was frustrated by the lack of solutions offered by the financial services industry. Buy and Hold is better than selling at the bottom and buying at the top, but is that really the best that the industry has to offer? I estimate that the financial services industry spends about $500 billion per year on research and Buy and Hold is the best they can come up with?
Being at retirement age, I didn’t necessarily have the time to wait out a bear market, particularly a long one like the one that lasted from 2007 to 2013. The Nasdaq was in a bear market for 15 years, from 2000 to 2015. I decided to take matters into my own hands.
Proving Them Wrong
Higher Returns & Less Risk
My research and analysis proved that it is possible to beat “Buy and Hold” by a wide margin and at the same time avoid large losses during market crashes like the one we are experiencing in 2022. It is possible to have the best of both worlds, high returns from the stock market with much lower risk. I was able to back test my new system using 100 years of stock market data and discovered that it was possible to double the returns of the S&P 500. I began utilizing the system I created to trade in my own account in 2020, just before the Covid crash. It was the perfect time to test it out. My new system/model crushed the market in 2020.
Sharing it With Others
I wanted to help out my friends and family, so I launched a hedge fund to manage other people’s money using this powerful new approach. But, because hedge funds are not available to all investors, I decided to launch Beyond Buy & Hold to educate everyone on this better way to invest. The first objective is to educate everyone on the benefits of this new approach and how and why it works. This is why I wrote the book, FIX YOUR 401K. The book is a great place to start, but some people prefer video training to books. So we also created video training courses to get your started. If you want to worry less about your money and consistently beat the returns of the “best available” approaches with much less risk, Beyond Buy & Hold is for you.
After about six months of research and analysis using advanced data analytics, I discovered a better way. And I also figured out why the financial services industry wants us all to “Buy and Hold”. They probably figured out what I figured out a long time ago, but it is not in their interest to share it with you. When you “Buy and Hold”, they keep earning all their commissions and fees. They don’t want you selling their products because they lose money that way. So, they have propagated the biggest advertising campaign in history for the concept of Buy and Hold. They have trained all their employees that it is the only way. Your financial advisor was trained by these firms. Buy and hold is much easier for financial advisors. There are millions and millions of client conversations every year touting the benefits of Buy and Hold. There are millions of articles published every year promoting the idea that Buy and Hold is the only way.
